Abstract
Simone Weil's life was short and intense (1909-1943) and took place in the tragic period of the two world wars. Her family, of Jewish origin, emigrated to America to escape Nazism. She was a physically weak woman whose intellectual probity and admirable ethical consistency brought difficulties and challenges. The last stage of her life was marked by the supernatural, an aspect in which the reading of St. John of the Cross played a role. Much has been written about her personality, distinguished by an immense compassion for the unfortunate. This paper focuses on her way of being and traces aspects of her life that attempt to answer the question: was she a depressive woman? It can be affirmed that she did not suffer from depression, although in her vital temperament there are indications to the contrary; such indications correspond to an uncommon compassion and an eminent attention to reality.
