Abstract

In order to understand the emergence of a “pedagogization of friendship” from the late 20th century onwards, this article examines the relationship between friendship, childhood, and education in the thought of Michel de Montaigne. This article analyses Montaigne's seminal work, Essays, to explore the possibility/impossibility of true friendship between children and the use of friendship as a pedagogical element. Based on this framework, the text is organised into the following sections: (1) a brief analysis of the key elements of Montaigne's concept of friendship; (2) an exploration of morality, virtue, and truth in Montaigne's thought; (3) an examination of the notions of human nature, education, and childhood in the French essayist’s work; and finally, (4) some concluding remarks. The article concludes that, in Montaigne's view, true friendship between children is impossible and, consequently, friendship cannot serve as a pedagogical element.
