Abstract

The main objective of this article is to understand the doctrine of just price developed by the late scholastics, identifying its philosophical bases. This is a bibliographical study that makes use of both the original works of late scholastics and studies from the 20th and 21st centuries on the subject. This school of thought composed mainly of Dominicans and later Jesuits, through the medieval tradition received, managed, over the 16th and 17th centuries, to develop a theory of subjective value in order to better analyze the doctrine of just price in a period of great transformations. This doctrine addressed several topics, such as the issue of monopolies and oligopolies, profits and wages, usury and interest, the limits of state intervention, always seeking to know how to discern the just from the unjust, since before being economists, they were moral theologians, that is, pastor of souls and guides of consciences. However, in order to prescribe a norm, they sought to describe economic processes, also using knowledge of Law, Philosophy and Theology. Thus, even if it was not the priority of these religious, they ended up contributing to the development of economic theory.
