EVALUATION OF THE ADDITION OF TIO2 ON THE MECHANICAL AND DURABILITY PROPERTIES OF COATING MORTAR

Abstract

Several research carried out regarding TiO2-containing coating mortars generally focus on photocatalytic reactions and do not discuss mechanical and durability properties. This paper aims to study mechanical properties and durability indicators in coating mortars with the variation of TiO2 addition content. CP-II-E-32, CH-I lime, natural quartz sand and artificial TiO2 were used. For this, the materials were characterized in terms of chemical and physical composition, and crystalline phases. In the mortars, the following were evaluated: compressive strength, flexural and pull-off strength, modulus of elasticity, water absorption by capillarity, crackability and digital microscope images. The results showed that only compression and bulk density were not influenced by the TiO2 addition content. In the others, a significant variation can be seen, in the sense of making the mortars weaker, less adherent and, therefore, less durable in terms of the parameters analysed. It is concluded that, for the addition of TiO2 to be viable, some precautions must be taken, such as increasing cement consumption and carrying out an experimental dosage in order to evaluate the most critical properties and thus guarantee a coating of good quality and durability
