Abstract

After their lifespan, ISO containers may generate huge environmental liability. Due to their robust structure, they may be reused in civil construction, with social and environmental benefits. In these applications, containers usually are modified by architectural reasons, such as introduction of openings in lateral sheets to accommodate doors and windows and the removal of an entire sheet to obtain bigger spaces by composition of containers. These openings may demand structural reinforcements to assure the structure efficiency. This work analyzes nine different opening cases in containers reused in civil construction by Finite Element Method. Localized reinforcements are used in sheets openings, and global ones in sheets complete removal. The main target is defining guidelines to assure the adequacy of containers reused in civil construction. Results showed that, in most cases, the proposed reinforcements are efficient and capable of approximate the structural behavior of containers with and without openings.
