Abstract

The construction of the Municipal Slaughterhouse of Santa Cruz was accompanied by intense debates in newspapers. The contract signed in 1874 by the company Coimbra & Farani was terminated by the government four years later under the allegation of non-compliance. Augusto Teixeira Coimbra, partner and engineer of the company, was accused of several illegalities in a series of articles published by the Ministry of Business in the main newspapers of the court. Several engineers that later became known names of the national political history, such as Pereira Passos and Abraão Reis, were involved in the issue. As for Augusto Teixeira Coimbra, the rare references to his name echo the government's accusations, portraying him as responsible for the rescission. The research presented here reveals, however, that the engineer and his company were victims of disputes between the Conservative and Liberal Parties, which controlled the dominant bipolar policy in the Second Kingdom.
